» Goal Keeper Training
Goal keeping is probably the most difficult position on the field.
Not only must the keeper be an excellent soccer player but then needs to specialize in the unique functions of
protecting the goal. The keeper is the last defender, but also starts his team's attack.
Sadly, in most cases, the keeper is also the most neglected player on the team. The main reason for that is lack of time.
The training of the keeper differs in many respects from the field players.
The conditioning program alone must be position specific.
While the field players need endurance and stamina, because they work over a long period of time, the
keeper works in brief moments of intense activities. He or she needs strength and agility.
The keeper is the only player allowed to use the hands.
With that comes the need to teach proper hand technique in catching, punching, deflecting and distributing.
S/he is also the only player allowed to put him/herself in dangerous positions.
For instance when challenging for the ball in one versus one situations, or diving low for a ball when
there are other players close by trying to score or clear. This definitely calls for learning the
proper techniques to avoid injury.
The keeper has another great need and that is the ability to forgive her/himself or a teammate when a
mistake is made and a goal is scored. In short the goalkeeper is a unique athlete and a person who
deserves an opportunity to learn as much as possible about the demanding position.
